While it's difficult to find a common thread between these topics, it is not impossible to find some kind of correspondence between them. These three topics are: (I) the history of psychology; (ii) the history of psychiatry; and (iii) the history of the study of the human mind.
When I was an undergraduate student, there was a section in my course called 'The Psychology of Civilization'. As a history student, I really enjoyed this class because of the inter-disciplinary and inter-cultural nature of the lessons we learned. While the general topic of psychology remained universal, there were several such scholars as Oscar E. Friedman, Thomas M. Gross, David Coleridge, Leon Festinger, and Alfred C. Kornhauser among others who contributed to the 'one philosophy' of psychology as a field of study. Although the history of psychiatry has been a huge part of the history of human experience, there was not one person who could be described as the originator of the field. For instance, Asperger's syndrome could be classified as a symptom of autism in DSM-III, but other people regarded it as a symptom of the Oedipal Complex. Although the beginnings of these fields can be traced to specific personalities and institutions, the kind of scholarship that we have today began with the 'one discipline' approach. For instance, the curriculum was actually set according to one subject, and one form of discipline, like that of English or Mathematics. There was one linear, 'institutionally recognized' way of teaching and learning, which would tend to give everyone a clear idea of what to expect. However, these days, with the progress of communication technology, these academic fields tend to be even more inter-disciplinary, with people who have traditionally been academic specialists coming together to share ideas and experiences, thus encouraging experimentation and innovation, and encouraging freedom of expression to the point where individual boundaries are blurred. The field of medicine, for example, is a system of disciplines that developed with the advent of modern science in the early twentieth century, and many specialists who used to be in separate departments are now regarded as part of the same discipline. A great example of the inter-disciplinary aspect of the history of psychiatry is the history of neuropsychiatry, which focuses on the study of the brain through its various functions. This includes studies of brain functioning and disorders, as well as the development of new theories and methods of treating patients. It also involves specialization in such fields as speech pathology and has developed to include new methods of treatment and management. The history of psychology, on the other hand, is not only about how people develop in the world, but also how they interact with each other. This can include things like attitudes towards authority, social interaction, as well as science and technology. The history of psychiatry is the history of medical science and is more or less concerned with how different diseases, psychological disorders, and diseases affect the behavior of people. With so many overlapping topics, it is easy to lose track of how closely related they are. The three categories of the history of psychiatry, for example, encompass such aspects as the history of how particular disorders arose in the field, the history of the history of diagnosis and treatment, as well as the history of the history of the study of the human mind. However, the inter-disciplinary aspect of this discipline is evident as is the freedom of inquiry that this kind of research allows. It is truly amazing that such diversities can be born out of so many seemingly unrelated fields.
